Pluralism versus Populism: Liberalism, fascism and their converging spatial logics

Pluralism versus Populism: Liberalism, fascism and their converging spatial logics

This contribution to the conference’s Final Roundtable explores relations between liberalism and fascism and their converging spatial logics. Drawing on research presented earlier that day, which examines deportation as a form of de-pluralisation, I explore integration-as-assimilation as a liberal process of de-pluralisation. I then identify parallels between fascist and liberal imaginaries of ‘the city’ as a spatial entity, referring to the Chicago School of Urban Ecology, Nazi ideas of the ‘organic city’ as developed by Gottfried Feder, and recent arguments for the 15-minute city.
