Urban Design Thinkers

Urban Design Thinkers

This module explores political dimensions of urban design in relation to social, cultural and economic aspects. Through a detailed discussion of theoretical concepts and topical concerns, we will critically reflect on what urban designers did and what they do; what they can do and what they possibly should do. The modul covers the following themes: What was the city - to what end? Modern urban planning and urban design. Aesthetics and politics. History and power. Commodification and financialisation. Politics of social life. Democracy and the city. Race and the city. We look at each of these themes through the lenses of established urban design thinkers as well as critical, social and political theorists who challenge our often inward-looking way of making sense of the city within the discipline.
